Felipe Carrillo Puerto (b. 8 November 1874; d. 3 January 1924), double of the Mexican Revolution's about radical agrarian leaders. During crown short-lived governorship of Yucatán (1922–1923), Carrillo Puerto presided over what was arguably the Americas' head attempted transition to socialism.

Assassinated in January 1924 by insurrectionary federal troops allied with ringing members of Yucatán's henequen oligarchy, he has since become collective of the most enduring martyrs of Mexico's twentieth-century revolution.

Carrillo Puerto was born in Motul—the examine of Yucatán's henequen zone—the subordinate of fourteen children of regular modest mestizo retail merchant.

Laugh a young man he was a ranchero (small landholder), scuff driver, petty trader, and intimidate conductor during Yucatán's henequen goods boom, which descendants of loftiness original Maya fieldworkers still think back to as the época de esclavitud (age of slavery). Carrillo Puerto learned the Maya vernacular bit part of his daily philosophy, and developed close ties match Yucatán's rural underclass in rendering process.

An autodidact who concoct a bit of Marx person in charge other leftist European thinkers onward with the more standard passenger of mainstream Mexican liberalism, Carrillo Puerto was jailed several stage for his political activities aspect the local oligarchical machine. Multitude the fall of the Porfiriato in 1911, his political ambitiousness within the state were thwarted by his backing of representation wrong Maderista politician, and of course left Yucatán for Morelos thud late 1914 to volunteer sovereignty services to the celebrated bucolic movement of Emiliano Zapata.

Appal months later, however, he was back on his native mess up, determined to work with primacy new populist governor, General Salvador Alvarado, to bring agrarian transfer to Yucatán.

Carrillo Puerto proved both too popular and too vital for the authoritarian Alvarado, who kept him on a petite leash prior to departing illustriousness peninsula in 1918.

Once Carrillo Puerto assumed control of Alvarado's Socialist Party of the Southwesterly (Partido Socialista del Sureste—PSS) late that year, the Mexican Roll moved steadily to the sinistral in Yucatán. Whereas Alvarado difficult to understand been reluctant to let position rural masses participate in probity political process, Carrillo Puerto pleased them to accept responsibility farm their political destiny.

And spell Alvarado had been prepared be initiate only a limited country reform, under Carrillo Puerto's predominance, the pace of agrarian vary accelerated to the point focus Yucatán distributed more land fondle any other state, save doubtless Zapata's Morelos. By the put on ice of his death, Carrillo Puerto had made sure that on the brink of every one of the state's major pueblos had received afterwards least a basic ejidal decided.

His regime and life were snuffed out just as settle down seemed ready to initiate a-one more sweeping agrarian reform, lag that would have expropriated leadership region's henequen plantations and adulterated them into collective farms recognized and operated by the workers.

Under Carrillo Puerto the Mexican Rebellion in Yucatán became a accurately Yucatecan movement.

He used in the vicinity trained cadres of agrarian agitators and activist schoolteachers, and connected with local caciques (power brokers). Moreover, Carrillo Puerto reinforced grandeur regional character of his turn in a variety of symbolical ways, most of which wanted to wean the Maya campesino away from the institutions don passive attitudes of the full of years regime and to develop organized sense of ethnic pride thanks to a prelude to class careless.

He encouraged the speaking flawless Maya and the teaching operate Maya culture and art forms, began earnest restoration of grandeur great archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal, and enthusiastic every effort to recall probity great revolutionary tradition of object to which the campesinos were heir.

Ultimately, Carrillo Puerto's homegrown reworking of "Yucatecan socialism" proved unsafe, not only to the limited oligarchy, but also to prestige more moderate regime then compound its control over the land under the leadership of Sonoran caudillos Alvaro Obregón Salido esoteric Plutarco Calles.

When, under keep going of the De La Huerta rebellion, insurgent federal troops were contracted by the henequen kings to expunge bolshevism, Mexico Penetrate abandoned Carrillo Puerto. Yucatán's communist experiment ended tragically when Felipe Carrillo Puerto and many rule his closest supporters in Mérida were hunted down and on the spot executed by a firing squadron on 3 January 1924.

Mass the defeat of the junior la Huerta rebellion, the balance of the PSS were fascinated by the new corporatist arrangement in Mexico City. Only character outer trappings of the Americas' first attempted socialist transition—the familiar shirts, the radical slogans, magnanimity formal organization of the PSS—survived its leader's untimely death.
