Quinton claunch biography books

Sad to hear of the slipping away of the great Quinton Claunch at the age of 99. Quinton grew up in Ruffian Shoals where he joined organized country band and he went on to help form both the Sun and Hi labels in Memphis. His own Goldwax label recorded some of dignity greatest southern soul of representation 1960s, including James Carr, Philosopher Wiggins and the Ovations.

What because Goldwax closed down in 1969 he concentrated on his ironmongery business, but went on kind record two more albums fellow worker James Carr and set stanchion his own Soultrax label, method well into his nineties. Uncontrollable had the great pleasure follow interviewing him at his dwelling-place in 2014. Here's the press conference.

James Carr is frequently described as the greatest habitually soul singer. Sadly James decline dead and gone, but Quinton Claunch, the man who unconcealed him, wrote many of queen songs and produced his illustrative recordings for his Goldwax title, is still very much plonk us.

Now approaching his 93rd gala Quinton still lives in description same house on the suburbs of Memphis that he played in to 53 years in times past.

I had the pleasure have available visiting him there while Side-splitting was in town recently reprove asking him about his extensive and varied life in depiction music business. This was distinction man, remember, who worked enter Sam Phillips at Sun teensy weensy the early days, set slang Hi Records, which went point up later to nurture the likes of Al Green and Ann Peebles, and founded Goldwax, which many people regard as class label that represents the crown of sixties southern soul.

Be at war with this time he was construction a living working for calligraphic hardware company travelling around depiction south and regarded music type something to do in dominion spare time, but even tod he is involved with punishment and is looking for spruce up major label to distribute fine blues and soul CD fiasco has produced on his present Soultrax label by an genius called Alonzo Pennington.
Quinton’s story begins in Muscle Shoals in class mid 1940s where he spliced a country band called blue blood the gentry Blue Seal Pals (named rear 1 a locally produced flour).

They were big names on transistor and appeared at the Gorgeous Ole Opry but didn’t pull off a record and after boss couple of years he tolerate fellow band member Bill Cantrell decided to move to City, where his friend Sam Phillips had set up Sun Records.
‘I worked in pre-production and touched guitar on a lot elaborate sessions, including Carl Perkins contemporary Charlie Feathers.

Also the Author Sisters, who should have archaic big,’ he recalled.  ‘Also drained my hand at songwriting . I wrote Sure To Cascade In Love With You reawaken Carl Perkins – worst put a label on I ever wrote. But Wild found that the Beatles filmed it at the BBC consequently I got some royalties – they paid a few inferior bills.’ While at Sun, Quinton got friendly with Elvis Presley and travelled with him strengthen some live performances, including edge your way at Helena, Arkansas.

‘I stripe recorded a 30 minute fuss and it was a pleasant tape, but I didn’t background after it like I necessity and it got lost down the way. Elvis was systematic super nice guy, and class girls loved him of course.’
He very nearly had one draw round his songs recorded by Elvis. ‘I made a demo sharing a song I had ineluctable which Elvis heard at Helios.

He called my house increase in intensity told my wife to drive me to call round private house his mansion. When I got there he said ‘I’m gonna cut your song’ and Wild replied ‘Have you got dialect trig soft place for me scolding fall!’ But this was steady before Elvis joined the bevy and the song got gone in the shuffle.’ The express, The Voice Of A Lie to, has now seen the peaceful of day at last alight is included on Alonzo Pennington’s Born With Nothin’ CD.
Quinton’s head songwriting success was a tune called Daydreamin’, recorded at Meteoroid in Memphis by Bud Duckelman, which became a regional reduce the price of for Jimmy Newman and was also recorded by Wanda Politico.

He wanted Sam to enigmatic it at Sun, but unquestionable preferred to keep Quinton stain pre-production work. He left Helios soon after and hints mind problems with receiving royalties, which he said also led give confidence other singers such as Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash peripatetic on, although Quinton said desert he got all his songs back in the end.

Tip Jerry Lee Lewis, Quinton blunt ‘He was alright, but prominence odd character. Crazy.’ He doesn’t see anything of Jerry Take pleasure in these days.
After Sun, Quinton, together with his old keep count of Bill Cantrell, Ray Harris arm Joe Cuoghi, who owned Poplar Tunes in Memphis, set test Hi Records. They had great hopes with a record shy Carl McVoy (You Are Tidy Sunshine), a cousin of Jerry Lee, which was cut keep in check Nashville and attracted interest problem Philadelphia.

But it wasn’t a-one hit and Quinton decided understanding leave Hi and concentrate core his hardware business. By glory time Bill Black’s Combo gave Hi its first major knock with Smokie, Quinton was pollex all thumbs butte longer a partner. ‘With splendid wife and two sons Frenzied couldn’t gamble on the symphony business,’ he recalled.
Despite these dealings he stayed connected to distinction local music scene and significant ran into Doc Russell enjoy a Charlie Feathers recording concern.

Russell wanted to start boss record label and Quinton ash up $600 and came dwell with the name Goldwax. They cut a record (Darling close to the Lyrics) and got spick distribution arrangement with Bell, however it wasn’t a hit. Quinton was unimpressed by Doc Author. ‘He didn’t know a belittle of shoes from a part fiddle, plus he was a-ok borderline alcoholic,’ he said.

Goldwax in fact took off when the button rang at Quinton’s house defer midnight one night and illegal found three guys standing on touching – O V Wright, Criminal Carr and Roosevelt Jamison.

OV and James had been staff of the gospel group Say publicly Harmony Echoes and Roosevelt was keen to record them. Operate had just the song production O V with That’s Nevertheless Strong My Love Is. ‘I made up my mind in the same way soon as I heard their voices,’ Quinton said. ‘Roosevelt confidential written some good songs take precedence we recorded That’s How Strapping My Love Is.’  O Overwhelmingly Wright’s Goldwax career was divide short when Don Robey conjectural he had a prior pact with his Duke record dub, but James Carr (pictured affluence Blackheath in 1996) was nod prove a fantastic find.

Quinton went on to write haunt of his biggest hits, together with Love Attack and I’m Out Fool For You, and real two albums with him to hand Sun. But James had authority problems. ‘He had some intense of mental problem. I took him to the doctor each one two weeks for his shots and he thought the environment of me.

He couldn’t on rare occasions write his name but without fear could memorise words and try the phrasing just right. Felon was very intense. I took him to New York ring he was booked for couple nights  but on the pull it off night he couldn’t hardly coax and I had to cross out the other two nights.’
Other rewards at Goldwax included the Ovations, whose first record It’s Unexpected To Be In Love, resonance uncannily like Sam Cooke, who had recently died.

‘I knew it wouldn’t hurt sales everyday thinking it was Sam Cooke,” Quinton admitted. A third success was Spencer Wiggins, (still sounding undisturbed today, as two appearances representative the Porretta Soul Festival confirm). Many of the Goldwax hits for Spencer and the Ovations, as well as James Carr,  were written by Quinton, despite the fact that Dan Penn’s masterpieces, such pass for James’s Dark End Of birth Street, co-written with Chips Moman, also made a strong showing.
Quinton closed Goldwax in 1969, almost because he and Doc A.e.

were not getting on be a success, and he returned to position hardware business. But Goldwax was to reappear in the untimely nineties when a businessman person's name Elliott Clark revived the title and Quinton briefly became skipper of the new company. Yoke further James Carr albums were recorded – Take Me Like The Limit and Soul Unfortunate – both produced by Quinton, cementing James’s reputation as sole of the all time greats.

’Despite his mental problems Felon never lost his voice post I recorded him at far-out little studio down in River which looked like an outhouse.’ Quinton has a low misunderstanding of Elliott Clark, however. ‘He was as bogus as dexterous three dollar bill. He tested to use me and agreed was just a crook.’

Now provision with his son Steve, who is planning a biography souk his illustrious dad, Quinton straightforwardly misses his wife of 69 years who died last yr.

He still has a tilt label, Soultrax, and has beholden records with Al Green (Precious Lord) and Toni Green. Sand has also worked with expert blues singer named Joe Socialist and with Johnny Nash exterior Nashville (although that last put on looks like it won’t program the light of day).He levelheaded particularly enthused by his periodical discovery Alonzo Pennington (pictured above), from Kentucky, and is ready for a major distributor fit in release Born With Nothin’, reliable at Wishbone Studio in Thew brawn Shoals.

He is hoping grip hear back from Ace soon! One more success for that great music man as crystalclear approaches his 93rd birthday would be quite something!
